sounter

Privacy Policy

Sounter browser extension for Google Chrome™. Effective date: 29 October 2026. Applies to version 0.6.0 and later until this page is updated.

Sounter processes tab audio on your computer only. It does not record audio, makes no network requests and has no account, analytics or ads. It does not sell, share or transfer any data.

Who we are

Sounter is published by Aanan Khurma, Zehen Foundation For Excellence. Contact: aanankhurma@gmail.com.

What Sounter does

Sounter sends the sound of a browser tab to an output device you choose, such as headphones or speakers, and lets you set that tab's volume, mute and equaliser.

Audio

When you route a tab, Chrome hands that tab's sound to Sounter. Sounter applies volume and EQ and plays the sound on the output you chose. The sound is processed in memory as it plays. It is not recorded, stored or sent anywhere. Capture ends when you stop routing, close the tab or close Chrome.

Microphone permission

Chrome reveals the names of your speakers and headphones to an extension only after you give it microphone access. If you allow it, Sounter opens the microphone once to unlock the device names and stops it at once. No microphone audio is read, stored or sent. Without this permission, Sounter still works with "System default". You can take the permission back at any time in Chrome's site settings for Sounter.

What is stored, and where

Sounter uses Chrome's extension storage on your computer. Nothing is synced to your Google account or sent to us or anyone else.

StorageContentsHow long
Session storage (chrome.storage.session) For each routed tab: output device ID and name, volume, mute, EQ bands and preset, the site's host name (for example youtube.com), the tab's title when it was routed, and the time routing started. Also a log of the last 500 Sounter events (see Diagnostics log). Until you close Chrome. Per-tab entries are also removed when you stop routing or close the tab.
Local storage (chrome.storage.local) Your preferences: the last output device you used (ID and name), whether the EQ panel is open, the EQ view, analyzer on or off, log level, and whether diagnostics include tab titles. Also the presets you save. Until you change them, or until you remove Sounter.

The host name and title of routed tabs are kept only so that Sounter can label them in its list of routed tabs. Sounter does not keep full web addresses or page content, and stores nothing about tabs you have not routed.

Diagnostics log

Sounter keeps a short log of its own events, such as routing started, device changed or an error, to help fix problems. Before an entry is saved, web addresses are cut to the host name, fields such as titles, page text, HTML and content are dropped, and long strings are shortened to 300 characters. The log holds at most 500 entries and is cleared when Chrome closes. The same entries are also written to the extension's developer console, which only you can see.

Copy diagnostics

If you click "Copy diagnostics", Sounter puts a report on your clipboard. The report contains the Sounter and Chrome versions, your platform, your preferences (the last output device by name only), the state of the audio engine, and for each routed tab: its number, host name, output device name, volume, mute and EQ. It also contains the recent log. Tab titles are included only if you turn that option on. Sounter never sends this report. You decide whether to paste it anywhere.
